New Study Abroad Program in Berlin, Summer II 2024

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies will begin offering a new study abroad program in Berlin starting July of 2024.

The summer program “German Film, Art, and Cultural History in Berlin” will provide an opportunity for students interested in film, visual culture, and German culture and history overall to engage directly with one of Germany’s cultural epicenters. The city of Berlin—an ideal urban classroom—is a site that fosters authentic, place-based learning centered on the artistic and cultural milestones of modern Germany. Germany’s capital city continues to be the culturally and artistically innovative locus it has been for more than a century, making it a perfect location for this study abroad program that specializes in film, culture, and the fine arts. 

The program will combine morning classwork with related afternoon activities, including excursions to museums, film archives, nearby cities, or local sites of cultural or architectural relevance in and around Berlin, such as the historic movie theater Kino International. Students will also have the chance to talk with contemporary filmmakers and artists in Berlin.

Students do not need prior knowledge of German cinema and visual culture or German language skills. The two courses aim to give an overview of German art movements and cultural history and will discuss the ruptures and continuities in these movements throughout the 20^th and 21^st centuries. Both classes will fulfill the Franklin College Requirement for FineArts/Philosophy/Religion.
