Prospective Students

WELCOME

Joe Brown Hall at the University of Georgia
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies is housed in Joe Brown Hall

Becoming proficient in another language is a relevant skill that opens up job opportunities here and abroad, while cultivating a deeper understanding of other cultures through their literature, films, and lives.

We offer majors in German and Russian; dual degree programs in German and World Language EducationGerman & Engineering, and Double Dawgs AB/MA; and a German minor and Russian minor.

STUDY ABROAD & EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

The Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies provides academically rigorous study abroad experiential learning programs that include immersion in the language of the host country. Students develop independent research skills in capstone courses or through research projects, increase their intercultural competence in study abroad and related international experiences, gain first-hand knowledge of different work environments in internships, and learn to appreciate and contribute to the social or educational work of others through service or community-based learning.

Thanks to the generosity of individual donors and foundations, the department offers travel awards and grants to recognize and support research and scholarship, and to support travel abroad for study or research.

Additionally, several alumni wishing to encourage high-achieving students who major in Russian or German each have established a financial award to be given at the end of each academic year.
