The Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies at the University of Georgia congratulates Phaidra Buchanan, a German minor and Social Studies Education major, who was named as a 2021 Rhodes Scholar. Begun in 1902, the fellowship is one of the most prestigious international scholarships, bringing its recipients to study at the University of Oxford. After finishing her undergraduate studies at UGA, Ms. Buchanan will begin graduate studies at Oxford in October, with an interest in education funding and policy.

Aside from being a standout student while studying German, Ms. Buchanan was active in department activities. She studied German language, culture, and environmental sustainability on the department's Study Abroad Freiburg program.
