The German Translation Exam is offered to graduate students twice a year, in early September and early February. Registration & Deadlines Please contact the Department Head for registration deadlines and exact exam dates. Exam Fee The exam fee is $25, payable by check on the day of the exam. Cash is also accepted. Exam Details Duration: 2 hours Materials: You may bring one print dictionary (online dictionaries are not permitted). The department also provides print dictionaries you may use during the exam. Format: Students select one passage (500–600 words) from a set of texts drawn from various disciplines and translate it into English. Passing Criteria The exam is graded pass/fail based on demonstrated reading knowledge of German. To pass, students must: Accurately convey the meaning of the passage in English. Avoid mistranslations or significant omissions. Show comprehension of key ideas. Results Grades will be emailed to students and their departments within two weeks of the exam.
