German Film Credit Hours: 3 The main aim of this course is to introduce undergraduate students to the history of German film. At the same time, we will address the social, political, economic, demographic changes and shifts in Germany of the 20th/21st century. The class will ask questions in relation to these changing discourses, and will determine how these changes are produced by, reflected in, and elaborated on in German cinema. The films to be discussed range primarily from Weimar film to contemporary productions and will be used as case studies in class. Selected films will be watched in clips or in their entirety. The course will be accompanied with readings about the individual films and film periods. Films are grouped into periods and will be watched and discussed chronologically. Students do not need prior knowledge of German cinema. Taught in German. Satisfies the Franklin College Fine Arts/Philosophy/Religion requirement.
