GRMN 3820

German Film
Credit Hours:
3

The main aim of this course is to introduce undergraduate students to the history of German film. At the same time, we will address the social, political, economic, demographic changes and shifts in Germany of the 20th/21st century. The class will ask

questions in relation to these changing discourses, and will determine how these changes are

produced by, reflected in, and elaborated on in German cinema. The films to be discussed

range primarily from Weimar film to contemporary productions and will be used as case studies

in class. Selected films will be watched in clips or in their entirety. The course will be

accompanied with readings about the individual films and film periods. Films are grouped into

periods and will be watched and discussed chronologically. Students do not need prior

knowledge of German cinema. Taught in German.
